Difficulty level is strenuous with constant elevation gain on rocky terrain.
Beat the heat of summer by backpacking to the highest peak East of the Mississippi River! We will start at Black Mountain Campground and hike about 5 miles to our campsite, then hike the last mile to the top of Mt. Mitchell where there is a tower with incredible views.
Due to the heat of summer I would like to hike early in the day so we can spend the afternoon in cooler temperatures. We will plan to stay in Black Mountain campground Friday evening, then start backpacking around 9am. This is a strenuous hike and not for beginners as we will start at 2,900 ft and end at 6,684 for a gain of almost 4,000ft. I hope you will join me for this challenging and rewarding hike!
